Sean Treacy House highly commended in RIAI Silver Medal

PKA's Sean Treacy House landmark social housing development for Dublin City Council has been highly commended in the RIAI 2017 Silver Medal for Housing awards.

A major element of the North East Inner City Integrated Area Plan, the scheme contains 53 units and a resident's community facility. Organised around a internal courtyard that sits above a single level of parking, the courtyard is enclosed on three sides by own-door walk-up duplexes , and by a six-storey apartment block that forms the frontage onto Buckingham Street.

The jury commended the well-considered handling of the Buckingham Street block and its corner with Empress Place, noting the controlled and dignified elevational treatment and its successful integration into the Georgian context without resort to pastiche or gimmick.

The jury also commended the use of the courtyard typology as an appropriate response to the challenging context, thereby creating a haven of passively overlooked semi-private amenity space, as well as its palpable sense of occupation and activity.
