Ballinasloe, Galway

PKA's Ballinaloe old persons' housing for Cluid was handed over - on time and on budget - on September 12th. Originally commissioned by the Society of St. Vincent de Paul in 2010, PKA were winners of a 2015 competition to take the scheme from detail design to its completion in September 2020.

Aspiring to create a sheltered village-like environment, all of the units have an aspect onto the shared surface street that connects to both the town centre and the retail park behind, and each has a private patio to the rear, as well as access to the communal 'allotment' gardens at either end of the scheme; thus facilitating a sense of both community among residents.

Designed to be a model of environmental sustainability, the scheme's highly insulated fabric, air-source heat pumps, and passive ventilation achieve an A2 building energy rating, thus adding to the ecomfort of residents and recucing their heating costs.
