PKA's Dawson Street wins RIAI Award

PKA's 51 A, B & C Dawson Street remodelling has been announced as the winner of the RIAI's 2000 Award for Adaptation and Re-Use.

A top-to-bottom remodelling of three run-down Georgian townhouses, the project comprised an upgrade of the ground floor retail and restaurant units, new serviced office suites on the floors above, and a stunning duplex apartment on the top levels of the Dawson Street / Duke Street corner.

Client Comment: The design and the mix of uses - retail, office and residential - that the architect has achieved within the constraints of heritage protection and fire safety regulations are a demonstration of how protected structures can be conserved and adapted to the demands of today without losing the essential aspects of their historic character or their architectural quality.

RIAI Jury Citation: Beautifully crafted and sensitively executed, this project takes the spaces of the existing buildings, revitalises them and secures their future as living and breathing elements of the city. The project offers a vision of what can be done with our underused and undervalued stock of historic urban buildings.
