Belgrave Road, Rathmines
The conservation and renovation project of 15 Belgrave Road involved the redevelopment of a three-storey Victorian Villa, built in the mid-nineteenth century. PKA's design converted it from its previous residential and office use to a single family dwelling.
The existing layout was retained, with the exemption of removing a section of flooring in the return area to facilitate the fitting of a new connecting stairs between the ground floor and the return area. A contemporary staircase was fitted within a two storey void space, providing a convenient link from the hall floor to the open plan kitchen and dining spaces at garden level.
The extension to the rear is enclosed by a mono pitch spanning between the rear wall of the main house and a new garden elevation containing two sets of patio doors.
New composite aluminium/wood sliding doors were installed in lieu of the existing fittings - to provide greater thermal efficiency, to reinforce the relationship between house and garden, and to capitalise of the south facing aspect of this elevation.
The over aching intention of the project was to restore the protected structure to its original use as a single family dwelling; conserving the features and elements which contribute to the historic character of the building and ensuring that the proposed interventions did not detract from its original qualities.Client: Private
