Lion & Pheasant, Shrewsbury

Shrewsbury's most prestigious townhouse hotel - the Lion + pheasant - opened its doors in November 2010 following a major renovation programme under PKA’s direction.

The project involved the entire renovation of this historic 22 bedroom hotel, including re-design of its bars, restaurant, meeting rooms and an external landscaped garden to the rear.

The existing buildings are listed for preservation - Grade 2 - and their proximity to the river resulted in a requirement for archaeological investigations as part of the sub-structure works.

Developed in collaboration with the conservation department of Shropshire County Council, PKA’s design conserves the existing interiors, while bringing the accommodation up to the highest ‘boutique hotel’ quality standards. Working on the project has exposed PKA to the full spectrum of British listed building, building control, and health and safety legislation requirements.

The most recent project builds on PKA’s previous architectural work on this hotel: construction of eight additional guest rooms in 2001, and ‘The Stables’ holiday apartments in 2005.

The project was developed and completed to a very tight programme. Work commenced on site in January 2010 and the hotel reopened for business nine months later. It has been widely acclaimed in reviews in the Telegraph, Independent, Birmingham Post and Shropshire star.
