Overends Cafe, Airfield

Airfield is a charitable orginisation, established by the Overend family in 1974, for educational and recreational purposes. The farm, gardens, café and historic house offer visitors a wonderful opportunity to enjoy and learn about food, farming, gardens, growing, history and heritage in a natural and relaxed environment.

The brief for this new 120 seat café was to create an interior which reflected the ethos of Airfield - to promote an awareness of nature and horticulture in the centre of the city.

The café building is divided into two spaces - the farm kitchen, with its two large oak tables and view into the working kitchen, and the café space which overlooks the reflecting pool and wildflower garden.

The furniture scheme consists of bespoke painted benches and thick, limed oak tables, designed by PKA and
crafted by artisan furniture makers in Ireland. This traditional aesthetic is complemented with contemporary aluminium chairs made from recycled soft drink cans.

The overall impression is one of lightness and airiness - the timber ceiling floats above glass screen walls while the alcoves to one side are playfully punctuated with windows of various sizes, opening up views to the vibrantly coloured wild flower meadow.
