Beechwood Road
PKA's remodelling of this Beechwood Road terraced house comprised a full renovation of the Victorian-era house – formerly divided into six apartments – into an attractive family home.
Restoration works included repointing the brickwork to the front elevation, replacement of sash windows and front door, and refurbishing the original timber staircase. Period features such as fireplaces, ceiling roses and cornicing were also retained and refurbished throughout, restoring the historic character of the original.
A new single-storey extension to the ground floor accommodates a spacious and light-filled kitchen / dining area, with floor-to-ceiling glazed sliding doors opening onto the rear garden. A timber-clad bank of storage was provided to the end of the garden, with access retained to the mews lane behind the property.
Four large bedrooms, family bathroom, utility room, and en-suite are provided on the first floor with a large skylight over the period staircase. The remodelling also included landscaping works and the provision of in-curtilage parking to the front of the property.
The shift between old and new is balanced by the use of considered detailing, a muted colour palette, and high-quality materials. In addition to the architectural design, PKA provided full interior design services including the selection and management of furniture, fabrics and finishes.
Sensitively restored, the original fabric was upgraded to achieve an A2 energy rating. In addition to a highly insulated fabric, sustainable heating was provided by an air source heat pump and underfloor heating to the ground floor.
