Quay Street & Environs, Balbriggan
The aspirations for Quay Street and Environs rejuvenation is the creation of a large, pedestrian-friendly event/market space focused around the arches of the Railway Viaduct, as well as upgrading of the public realm in the carpark areas and green open space on both sides of the Bracken River, transforming it into a highly accessible and family-friendly space which can facilitate events and promote activity. Areas of soft landscaping encourage flora and fauna, accentuating the amenity of green space and the Bracken River.
Redevelopment of the public realm will continue through to the Harbour, culminating in destination buildings to drive the economic and social offering. As a large, pedestrian-priority space, Quay Street and Environs will be a primary destination for daily social interaction; safe, friendly, vibrant and accessible for people of all ages and abilities.
The proposal looks to develop the amenity of the Bracken River, currently a deep culvert running through the site. The proposal will remove existing handrails and bring people to the water’s edge. Important to the scheme is improved flood mitigation and biodiversity while also offering a public amenity space to enjoy the river.
A reduction in car parking spaces and a move away from vehicular dominance on site is representative of the wider active travel strategy for Balbriggan. Emphasis is placed on pedestrian priority space and connections to cycling routes to promote public amenity in addition to sustainable forms of transport.
The Quay Street and Environs design seeks to be an exemplar of best practice, in terms of urban design, environmental responsibility, heritage conservation, universal access and architectural excellence. The project forms part of the ‘Our Balbriggan’ Rejuvenation Programme, along with PKA’s proposed Creative Hub at No. 2 - 4 Dublin Street, Balbriggan.
